Hello! My name is Susie Lesaletmang.
I am from Falalop Woleai. I am going to tell you a little about my island and my culture.
I am especially interested to share with you how we get our food source in the island.
We are very much surrounded by water. We get our source of protein mainly from the water such as fish, clam, lobster, ect...
Few supplement comes from a few pigs and chickens raised by each family.
We gather our food from our gardens and the taro patch. Coconuts, bananas, breadfruit, and papayas are the dominant crops on the island.
The special crop is taro which is the island favorite. This special crop is planted in the taro patch.
Taro patches are landfills with swampy and top soil cultivated only for taros.
All together, the taro patches made up about 6-7 square acres on Falalop Woleai.Women often make trips daily to fertilize and to weed around the crop.During breadfruit season, men help pick the mature fruit before they get rotten.
We have so many ways to preserve breadfruits. The common one is to store them underground.
This method last for about a year. These are some of our helpful ways to live on a small Island. 97/10/06
