Woleai Report#015

October 10, 1997 (Friday), sunny

Oct. 13, at Falalap, Woleai; A sack covering premature flower is cut for "tuba". Liquid collected from this portion will be changed into tuba, or coconuts liquor. For men on the island, it is very important job to collect the liquid every morning and evening.

Dahlia read out a message from World School Yap Club, translated in Woleaian.
It was about trash and it is also an important theme here in Woleai. I was listening to her, wondering what these students think about Yap High School members are to start recycling project.

Then we opened a present in a big plastic box from Jinengo Elementary School. They put various goods which they use in Japan with a message which wonders whether Woleai students think them as unnecessary.

We talked about trash problem some days ago and the best way to solve the problem is not to have unnecessary thing and use materials which are degradable, then we discuss what people use for the same purpose.

First of all, a sponge rubber scrubbing brush, which is difficult to dispose when it gets used and old. Woleai students immediately said "We use coconut husk to wash dishes."

I showed a bunch of tooth picks. Then Christino, smiling, picked up one of the thatches behind him and took out the hard core of the coconut frond. This is "local dental frost," which people have been using to clean their teeth for centuries. They can also sharpen a small piece of wood to make a tooth pick.

@The list of Japanese items and the goods in Woleai

@People in Woleai take everything necessary in life out of nature. This is one of the reasons that they do not produce trash. Can you live without making non-degradable trash at all?
